President Donald Trump answered the midterm losses with a run of Truth Social posts late on Tuesday night — vowing to become a political pundit on the results, blaming Fox News for the losses, turning on Texas Governor Greg Abbott as a "RINO," and posting a photo of a red cap carrying a single word: "VETO."
"I'm going to become a Political Pundit, both good and bad, on the reasons these Candidates won and lost!" he wrote, as Democrats were projected to take both chambers of Congress. The Associated Press has since declared the Senate for the Democrats, and the networks project the House to follow.
He put part of the blame on Fox News. "Fox News bears responsibility for these losses by constantly and consistently putting on the Democrat opposition, and worse. GOD BLESS AMERICA!" he wrote. He also demanded to know why former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio was sitting on the network's election panel, calling de Blasio the worst mayor in New York's history.
He then turned on Abbott, who lost the Texas governor's race to Democrat Gina Hinojosa in a call by the AP. "If Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, hadn't become a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life, he wouldn't have lost," he wrote. "He went back to his original formula, and it wasn't pretty!"
And he posted the cap — red, in the style of his MAGA caps, with "VETO" in large white letters across the front. It was the same warning he had sounded before the polls closed on Election Day, when he said he holds the "ultimate power — it's called 'veto'."
The posts were defiant, but they are only half of the President's position. He has told Politico that while he holds the veto right, he does not want to sit there for two years and veto everything — and on the same night, he told the New York Times that he accepts the results and will work with the Democrats who now control the Senate.
For American families, that mix decides what happens next: tax bills, border measures, judges and anything meant to bring down household costs must now pass a Democratic Congress and earn a Republican president's signature — or die by his veto. Trump is promising to grade every candidate, fight the coverage and keep the veto ready; he is also saying he will deal. The next two years will be decided between the two.
