A Chester County judge has ordered three polling places to stay open until 8:30 p.m. on Election Day, half an hour past Pennsylvania's normal 8 p.m. close, after problems setting up the voting machines delayed their opening on Tuesday morning.
The order from the Court of Common Pleas covers Precinct 201 (Easttown 3) at the Easttown Township Library, 720 First Avenue in Berwyn; Precinct 210 (Easttown 6) at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 217 Berkley Road in Devon; and Precinct 244 (East Goshen 2) at Goshen Baptist Church, 1451 West Chester Pike in West Chester. Every vote cast at those three places after 8 p.m. will be a provisional ballot.
The rest of the county is unchanged: every other Chester County precinct closes at 8 p.m. as scheduled, and the ballot drop box at the Easttown Library also closes at 8 p.m., even though voting inside continues to 8:30.
For voters in those three precincts, the ruling hands back the time the morning's machine problems took away: anyone who could not vote because the machines were not ready can still cast a ballot until 8:30 p.m., and the provisional ballots cast in the extra half hour are reviewed and counted under the same rules as every other provisional ballot in Pennsylvania.
