Kamala Harris came to Atlanta on Thursday to fire up volunteers for Senator Jon Ossoff — and her introduction of him went sideways in the first sentence. Ossoff had just welcomed her to the stage, asking the crowd to make some noise for the former Vice President. Harris returned the favour: "Let's have a drum roll for the next..." — she paused — "...and continuing Senator from the state of Georgia." Ossoff is, of course, already the senator; Harris caught the error mid-line and folded it into the introduction, but the stumble was caught on camera and the clip has been spreading ever since, passing 820,000 views on one post alone by Friday evening.
The exchange was friendly — Ossoff introduced Harris warmly, she laughed through the recovery, and the two hugged on stage in front of the "United for Georgia" backdrop. But in the final days of a campaign, a slip like this travels further than the speech around it: Harris had come to Georgia to project strength for a senator fighting for his political life, and the moment that came out of the rally was the fumbled title.
Ossoff's seat is one of the most contested in the country, and both parties are flooding Georgia in the closing stretch — the former Vice President's visit was meant to drive turnout among the Democratic base in Atlanta. A verbal slip decides nothing on Tuesday; votes do. But it is the clip of the rally that the country will remember.
