The message on illegal voting is loud and clear. The Justice Department in Washington announced on Monday that 48 noncitizens have been charged across five states — Pennsylvania, California, Florida, New York and Nevada — with election-related crimes.
The charges cover illegal voting in federal elections, fraudulent voter registration, and false claims of U.S. citizenship made to register or vote. Twenty-eight of the 48 defendants are in California, with the rest spread across the other four states.
All but one of the defendants are lawful permanent residents. The one exception is a 73-year-old Cuban illegal alien charged with voting in 2024.
The cases say plainly what the administration has argued since taking office: voting in American elections belongs to American citizens, and those who vote or register illegally — citizen or not — will be found and charged.
