President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in a phone interview on Fox News' Fox & Friends, on the morning of the midterm elections after voting began, that the United States would stop paying Israel about $4 billion a year by the end of 2026.
"Bibi Netanyahu and I have made a deal that we give Israel $4bn a year, and we made a deal months ago that we're stopping," Trump said.
Trump said Netanyahu had raised the idea himself, saying it would be "appropriate" for Israel to stop receiving aid, after the two had discussed it for a couple of years and settled it months ago.
Asked why the payments would end, Trump said: "We've already agreed that by the end of this year we won't be paying Israel. Now we'll help Israel if they need it." He added: "We were giving them 4 billion, we are, but it gets cut off at the end of the year. Why? Because they don't need it." He also said: "Israel is a very thriving country."
Trump said Israel can still buy American weapons and pay for the weapons it wants, and that the alliance itself is not changing. He also said some Democrats and left-wing politicians had used U.S. funding for Israel as a talking point to criticise Republicans.
It was not immediately clear which exact funding Trump meant, or how it would work in practice. No immediate comment from Netanyahu's office was reported, and the White House gave no further details on timing or scope.
For context, the current 10-year memorandum of understanding, signed in 2016, provides about $3.8 billion a year — not $4 billion — from fiscal 2019 to 2028, comprising $3.3 billion in Foreign Military Financing and $500 million in missile defence, subject to annual Congress appropriations. Trump did not say whether that agreement would be ended early.
Netanyahu said in a May interview on CBS's 60 Minutes that he hoped to taper U.S. support to zero over roughly a decade, and in a June letter wrote that it was time for Israel "to move from aid recipient to partner." In July, the House voted 314 to 104 against an amendment that would have halted aid to Israel.
