Update #12 — Demby not linked to the shootings, authorities say
Authorities say Treyveion Demby, 28, is not connected to the three Deep Ellum shootings and was not responsible for any of them. Demby was arrested over the weekend in the first case under the federal Operation Deep Cover and faces a federal charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon; officials have not directly linked his arrest to the shootings. Dallas police say no arrests have been made in the two fatal shootings, and officials are urging other suspects to surrender. -

Update #11 — Yancy also faces federal gun charge; second man arrested in Deep Ellum shootings
David Yancy, 31, now also faces a federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, in addition to seven state aggravated assault counts and a probation violation, officials said at a Thursday news conference. U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould said surveillance video shows Yancy pulling a handgun from his waistband on Main Street about 1 a.m. Sunday and firing 11 rounds into a crowded street, striking seven people. Yancy, who turned himself in and was booked into the Dallas County Jail, was on felony probation for child endangerment and had an active arrest warrant. A second man, Treyveion Demby, 28, was also arrested after an officer saw him pointing a loaded handgun toward Main Street early Sunday; he faces a federal charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Police believe two or three other people were involved in the three shootings, and no arrests have been announced in the two fatal shootings. -

Update #10 — First arrest in the shootings: David Yancy, 31, faces seven aggravated assault counts
Dallas police have made the first arrest in connection with the Deep Ellum shootings. David Yancy, 31, was arrested late Wednesday and faces seven counts of aggravated assault as part of a mass shooting, in connection with the second of the three shootings — the Main Street shooting outside a 7-Eleven in the 2600 block of Main Street around 1 a.m. Sunday. Witnesses told police a man dressed in red ran into the back lot of the convenience store and opened fire; onlookers were shot in the hands, feet, shoulders and torso. Yancy's arrest came within hours of police releasing edited surveillance footage of the moments before that shooting. A tip that the shooter had broken both of his ankles led investigators to hospital records showing paramedics had taken a man to a hospital around 5 a.m. Sunday; the phone number the man gave the hospital led investigators to Yancy. The four people killed were in the other two shootings. It was not immediately clear whether Yancy had an attorney. Dallas police and federal authorities are scheduled to hold a news conference at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. -

Update #8 — Medical examiner identifies two of the four dead; federal task force announced
The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office has officially identified two of the four people killed in the Deep Ellum shootings as Kaniesa Scott, 21, and Unique Elise Benjamin, 28. Scott was pronounced dead at 1:08 a.m. Sunday at Baylor University Medical Center; Benjamin died in the roadway in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street. The other two people killed have still not been officially identified. On Monday, the U.S. Attorney announced Operation Deep Cover, a federal task force of the FBI, ATF, DEA, U.S. Marshals, Texas DPS and Dallas police that will work Deep Ellum in uniform and plain clothes. The first federal defendant, Treyveion Demby, 28, is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm after an officer saw him pointing a loaded pistol toward Main Street — police stress he is not charged in the shootings themselves, and nobody has been charged in the three shootings.
