Update #2 — Rescue total rises to 57 as floodwaters recede; one firefighter hurt

At least 57 people were rescued by swift-water teams in the McCaysville area before the floodwaters began to recede on Thursday, November 5, according to the Fannin County Emergency Management Agency — up from the more than 30 rescues first reported. One firefighter suffered a minor injury when a propane tank exploded, and a few residents were treated for suspected hypothermia and shock, but McCaysville Police Chief Michael Earley said everyone appeared to be OK, and no deaths have been confirmed. The Toccoa River reached a record 18 feet, the flooding shut down the McCaysville water treatment plant, prompting a boil-water advisory, and cellphone and power outages complicated the response. We are following this case and will update it again as soon as new information comes.
