BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, USA — Man with a large knife shot dead by Boston police after charging at officers
Boston police shot and killed a man armed with a large knife in the city's Brighton neighborhood on Friday morning, October 30, 2026, after officials said he charged at officers during an apparent mental health crisis. Officers responded to Selkirk Road just before 7 a.m. after an initial report of a man armed with a large knife who was threatening to harm himself, Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said at an afternoon news conference. Cox said officers engaged the man for about 20 minutes to de-escalate the incident while other officers and emergency medical crews gathered outside 24 Selkirk Road. The man initially did not present a threat to officers, Cox said, but he later charged at officers on the porch area while making threats to harm them, and chased an officer. "They retreated as much as they could until they couldn't," Cox said, and the man was shot once in the stomach. Officers and EMS personnel immediately rendered aid, and the man was taken to a hospital in critical condition; police confirmed shortly after 2 p.m. that he had died from his injuries. Two officers involved in the incident were also taken to a hospital for evaluation, and Cox said they were not "heavily injured." The man's name was not released. Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said his office will conduct a thorough investigation into all the facts and circumstances surrounding the shooting, including a review of officer body-camera video. Mayor Michelle Wu said her heart goes out to everyone affected by the tragedy and thanked the district attorney and the commissioner for their work to ensure a thorough investigation. We are following this case and will update it again as soon as new information comes.
