HAWTHORNE, CALIFORNIA, USA — Woman and teen son found critically hurt at home, person of interest held

A woman and her teenage son were found critically injured inside a Hawthorne home on Thursday afternoon, October 29, 2026, in what authorities are investigating as an apparent attack. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives responded around 3:20 p.m. to the 4000 block of 139th Street, near Jim Thorpe Park and Prairie Avenue, to assist the Hawthorne Police Department, according to the Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff's Department initially reported that the woman had been fatally injured and was pronounced dead at a hospital, while the child was in critical condition. The department later corrected its account: the woman is alive but also in critical condition. NBC4 reported that the second victim is the woman's teen son and that the woman was not expected to survive. Neither victim has been publicly named — the woman's name was being withheld pending notification of relatives — and authorities have not said how the two were injured. A person of interest was arrested at the scene for unrelated alleged offenses. Neighbours told reporters at the scene that the man taken into custody was the woman's brother, but the Sheriff's Department did not confirm that detail. Investigators do not believe there is a threat to the community. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. We are following this case and will update it again as soon as new information comes.
