Gunman killed one man and wounded seven in a racist terror attack — Trappes, France — October 23

A gunman opened fire at several locations in Trappes and neighbouring La Verrière, west of Paris, on Friday, October 23, 2026, killing one man and wounding seven other people in what France's president called a racist terrorist act. The attacker fired from his vehicle and on foot along a route of about 12 kilometres, and was arrested less than 20 minutes after the shooting began. The man killed was Pengo Bossio Wangi, 26, a Black French national of Congolese heritage. Among the seven wounded was an 11-year-old girl. As of Thursday, October 29, four of the wounded had serious injuries and one remained in a life-threatening condition. On October 29, national counterterrorism prosecutor Olivier Christen announced preliminary charges against the suspect, identified as Kevin T., 39, a French national: murder and attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise, aggravated by the victims' actual or perceived race, ethnicity, nationality or religion, with further reported charges including participation in a terrorist criminal conspiracy and possession and transport of a Category A weapon. The prosecutor said the suspect admitted premeditation and specifically targeting people he believed to be Muslim or from sub-Saharan Africa or North Africa, said he chose Trappes because he regarded it as a haven for Islamists, denied intending a terrorist act, and said he had no regrets. He was placed in pretrial detention on Thursday evening. Investigators said the weapon was a Second World War-era Sten-type submachine gun, that the suspect's apartment had been booby-trapped with gas cylinders and an electrical timer, and that a copy of Mein Kampf and self-designed nationalist stickers were found in searches. He also has a reported history of psychological and psychiatric problems and drug addiction, and toxicology showed cannabis, cocaine and prescription drugs. President Emmanuel Macron called the attack a "racist terrorist act," and the government has announced a national tribute to the victims. The charges are preliminary allegations in an ongoing judicial investigation. We are following this case and will update it again as soon as new information comes.
